El Pony Pisador and Joan Garriga present “A La Gandula,” a summer ode to laziness

El Pony Pisador present the first in a series of collaborations they are preparing for the coming months. This will be with Joan Garriga, member of Dusminguet and La Troba Kung-Fú, and one of the great references in popular music in Catalonia.

La Gandula is an ode to laziness that, to the rhythm of calypso, invites us to lie down and enjoy a contemplative life. El Pony Pisador has incorporated sounds of beach and summer music from around the world, specifically Jamaican mento and Caribbean calypso rhythms, as well as the lap steel guitar and the ukulele from Hawaii. The group members have learned to play these instruments exclusively for the occasion, highlighting the steel drum, traditional from Trinidad and Tobago.

The aim of “La Gandula” is to emulate the sound of beach icons of popular culture such as Disney’s “Under the Sea,” the game “Super Mario Sunshine,” or the soundtracks of “SpongeBob SquarePants,” as well as to pay tribute to Caribbean and Hawaiian artists like Harry Belafonte, The Jolly Boys, or Bobby Ingano.

All of this is accompanied by the Mediterranean spirit of the voice and diatonic accordion of Joan Garriga, who with a bass to the rhythm of a habanera, reivindicates the concept of Il Dolce Far Niente, “The Pleasure of Doing Nothing.” In the lyrics, written jointly by both artists, the usual calypso references to tropical fruit have been “Mediterraneanized” and replaced with gazpacho, watermelon, or grilled sardine.

Both the arrangements and the musical production and the music video have been self-managed by El Pony Pisador. The mix is by Mario Patiño at Atlàntida Estudio and the mastering by Ferran Conangla.
